Pete V. Domenici, the son of Italian immigrants, began his political career when he was elected City Commissioner in Albuquerque in 1966. The next year he was elected Chairman of the City Commission. Then in 1972, he ran for a Senate seat in the U.S. Congress, beginning a 36-year career. He ranks as the longest-serving senator from New Mexico and one of the top 15 longest-serving senators in U.S. history.
